Alicona supplies measurement equipment to Makino during IMTS 2010

Makino, a global manufacturer of high speed machining centres and EDM machines displayed an InfiniteFocus 3D measurement system during the IMTS show in Chicago recently.

This enabled Makino to show how advanced quality assurance in the field of high precision and micro technology using their high performance iQ300 vertical machining centre can be performed.
As this also applies to components with small radii and angles, the technology can be used to show how effective the machining process of the Makino high performance machining centres was.

At Makino, the optical system is used for the measurement of high resolution, 3D inspection of high tolerance, micro machined features for plastic mold cavities, cores and tooling components.

John Bradford, Makino’s Micromachining R&D Manager about the optical system: “Alicona’s
InfiniteFocus metrology solution provides an ideal compliment to Makino’s micro machining technologies. This tool enables the user to analyze 3 dimensional machined surfaces to a very high degree of resolution, so that a clear understanding of processing trends can be established, and then intelligent process manipulations can be applied as needed. Furthermore, final 3D surface inspections can be quickly made, and compared to the original CAD data. Final dimensional deviations out of prescribed tolerance can be simply identified and corrected as needed. It is obvious that this powerful metrology technology will allow clients to improve their product quality, but most importantly, it will allow them to more intimately understand and adjust their in-process machining techniques to improve throughput efficiencies.”

3d micro-coordinate measurement technique for roughness and form measurement

Alicona offers optical 3d surface measurement systems for quality assurance in research and production. Core competence is the measurement of roughness and form also across large measurement areas and volumes. The cutting edge measurement and the measurement of small radii and angles are typical applications. Focus-Variation, the core technique of the InfiniteFocus line, combines the traditional surface metrology and the micro coordinate measurement technology. This technology achieves traceable and repeatable results in highest resolution even in production.
