Dimensional metrology in combination with collaborative robots 


Stepper is one of the technology leaders in the field of high-performance punching tools. At EMO we will show you how the tool expert uses the optical coordinate measuring system µCMM in combination with collaborative robots. The range of applications includes embossing inserts, embossing dies, bending inserts, bending dies, etc.

The component being measured:
3-up stamping insert for high-performance stamping tools, which are used for the production of miniaturized automotive contacts. Stepper produces up to 2250 plug contacts per minute, and within just a few years 3 billion parts have already been produced.  

What is important for the measurement: 
Dimensional accuracy, surface quality and the position of the embossing die relative to the outer contour. As 3 parts are produced simultaneously with each stroke in this stamping process, it is also checked whether all 3 forms match. 

What is also possible with µCMM: 
Reduced measuring times with highest accuracy. One of many benefits is that it is not necessary to measure the complete component. Users only need to measure the relevant measuring positions. “We only have to measure selected positions of the tools´ contour. This reduces measurement times by more than 2/3.”

What is the benefit of Vertical Focus Probing?
The possibility of measuring components with flanks of more than 90° opens up a completely new spectrum of parts for Stepper.  "To date, we have mainly measured embossed and bent parts. Now we can also measure cylindrical, continuous contours such as cutting punches and cutting inserts." 

How is automation implemented?
µCMM is extended with a collaborative robot arm. This Pick & Place solution enables automatic assembly and measurement including sorting in OK/not OK components. The teach-in of measurement series takes place in only 3 steps and requires no previous knowledge of measurement technology.

Measurement of a 3-up stamping insert for high-performance stamping tools

The measurement object is a 3-up stamping insert, measured with the µCMM and a rotation unit (Real3D). To analyze the stamping insert, the following parameters are measured:

  • Shape accuracy over the entire stamping insert
  • Measurement of the position of the stamping insert in relation to the outer surfaces
  • Contour inspection: angle and radius measurement
  • Surface quality: Profile and surface roughness

µCMM, the first purely optical CMM machine, is used to measure extremely tight tolerances in high accuracy. Users combine advantages from tactile coordinate measuring technology and optical surface measuring technology and measure the dimension, position, shape and roughness of components with only one sensor.

Automated Placing and Measurement of Components


The system is based on the interaction between an administrator who pre-defines automation processes, the collaborative robot for the manipulation and placting of components as well as high-resolution optical 3D measurement technology.  Pick & Place can also be used in smaller production environments and pays for itself within ten months.

Highly accurate optical 3D measurement systems

Compact Cobot

Cobots combine a collaborative 6-axis robot and a robust optical 3D measurement sensor to deliver traceable and repeatable high-resolution measurements, even in production. They require no prior knowledge of metrology and make handling, programming, and executing measurement series easy. This is made possible by intuitive hand-guided controls for the teach-in of measurement series, automatic measurement evaluation, and a no-enclosures safety concept. The Compact Cobot is a universal solution applicable to all industries to verify surface state and dimensional accuracy of also large components.


InfiniteFocus G5

With the Bruker Alicona G5 users benefit from a micro-coordinate 3D measuring machine and a surface roughness measuring device, combined in a single system. The principle of Focus-Variation allows the measurement of shape and roughness on small, large and heavy components. With an automation interface, InfiniteFocus can also be used for fully automatic measurement in production.

InfiniteFocus SL

InfiniteFocusSL is a cost efficient optical 3D measurement system for easy, fast and traceable measurement of form and finish on micro structured surfaces. Users measure both form and roughness of components with only one system. Measurements are achieved in seconds and features, such as a coaxial laser for quick and easy focusing, further increase usability. With an automation interface, InfiniteFocusSL is also applied for fully automatic measurement in production.



It is a fully automated cutting edge measurement system for quality assurance of drills, millers and other round tools to be applied in production. Specifically, the EdgeMasterX enables 3D measurement of multiple cutting edges. When utilized in combination with a motorized rotation unit, users benefit from the measurement of multiple tool edges, even chamfered edges, in one single measurement run.
